Dream Askew | Dream Apart are a pair of games by Avery Alder and Ben Rosenbaum, in which players collectively tell the story of Queer Strife Amid the Collapse (in Dream Askew), or Jewish Fantasy of the Shtetl (in Dream Apart). Each game is a beautiful, quick-to-learn, community-based Tabletop Roleplaying Game, perfect for both newbies to TTRPGs and veteran players alike.
Our players will determine which story they want to tell, in either one or two groups, and be guided by a facilitator through the process of creating characters, learning the rules, and telling a story that touches your very soul. The month of May is Jewish Heritage Month – as such, Purim-style costumes are highly encouraged, and don’t be surprised if the stories we tell reflect that!
Character sheets, pencils, and index cards will be provided. Dream Askew | Dream Apart is built in the Belonging Outside Belonging system, also known as No Dice, No Masters, which means you won’t need dice for this event – however, feel free to bring them anyway if you just feel like showing off your shiny math rocks.
Registration to participate in this SCENT-FREE gameplay is required in advance. There are 15 spots available for this game, so please register responsibly. If you are unable to make it, please give us advance warning so that we can give your spot to the next person on the waitlist. No game playing experience required.
We thank Gaming With Out On The Shelves for their hospitality in hosting us!

WHO ARE WE?
Sam Elkind (he/they) is a board member with Out On The Shelves Library, and the Head Librarian at the Isaac Waldman Jewish Library. They started playing Dungeons & Dragons 3rd Edition in 2001, were introduced to other RPGs in high school in the late ’00s, and have been running games in various systems since 2013. He started Gaming With Out On The Shelves (GWOOTS) in February 2023, and has run one-shots nearly every week since! Sam specializes in comedic stories that play with expectations (like running Addams Family and What We Do In The Shadows games in Vampire: the Requiem), and loves to try new systems. His special skill at the table is the ability to learn any RPG in 24 hours — yes, even Shadowrun! If you are interested in getting more info, following the Out On The Shelves socials, or joining GWOOTS, check out https://linktr.ee/out_on_the_shelves.
